One more out of the Q section, and then it’s time to get serious.
It’s probably just as well too, because this last one is a real winner:
quiz, out of bsd-games.
This has the vague scent of arithmetic about it, and yet somehow far more irritating than the former. Perhaps it’s just me, but if I get a question wrong, I don’t want to be goaded with “What? What? What?” as if the teacher can’t hear. Grr. 👿
quiz works off pairs of word lists, and you can reverse the direction of the quiz simply by reversing the context of the commands. In other words,
quiz Africa capital or
quiz capital Africa.
If you don’t know an answer, a blank line will show it, and if you tell it to choose tutorial mode, quiz will loop back around to repeat questions you got wrong, or didn’t know.
I should mention that some of the default quiz files (at least in Arch) are for languages that use character sets that might require a special font. And if that’s not visible in the framebuffer, you’ll get scrambled text.
And one more note: I don’t know how up-to-date
quiz is, with regard to current events. It might be that the capital you’re being quizzed on was renamed a decade ago. 🙄
I guess on the whole it’s not a terrible program, just lacking in tact. If you need something to drill continental capitals or Latin roots, this might work.
But really, I think you can find a better teacher than this. 😐
